EFTPS Email Fraud Scheme

Americans are receiving emails from fraudsters purporting to be from the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, EFTPS. The emails come from addresses that look like this:
customers0022@eftps.gov.

The emails claim that your federal tax payment has not been received. This is a fraud. The fraudsters have also created a website at eftps.gov. The website is also a fraud.
The website contains malware that will attempt to infect your computer.

The IRS advises anyone receiving these emails to forward the emails to their attention at:
phishing@irs.gov. You can read more on what the IRS has to say about this scam on their site, http://www.irs.gov/privacy/article/0,,id=226755,00.html.

The IRS says that they will never contact you by email.

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) has a website that provides consumers with additional information on how to avoid phishing scams and other forms of electronic fraud.

People are urged to be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal financial information. Often, these emails will also have link to a website. Never follow a link in an email that you suspect may be fraud.

The APWG also advises people to avoid completing online forms that ask for personal financial information unless those forms are on secure websites or by telephone. Phishers are now able to “spoof” https:// and also the yellow locks that make a website appear to be legit mate.

BigNewsNow recently received a number of the EFTPS emails. Upon review of these emails, we noted that were numerous misspellings throughout the email. This is what was in the email sub-headline: THE ESAIEST WAY TO PAY YOUR FDEERAL TAXES.

If you receive any of these emails, you are urged to forward them to the IRS. You can also report them to APWG.
